Sequence of the nucleoprotein (NP) gene of the influenza A virus reassortant 81/HO, carrying
the NP originally derived from A/Hong Kong/1/68 (H3N2)

The nucleotide sequence of the nucleoprotein (NP) gene of the influenza A virus
reassortant 81/HO (1), carrying segments 1,2,5,6,8 of A/Hong Kong/l/68 (H3N2) and
segments 3,4,7 of A/FPV/Rostock/34 (H7N1) has been determined by using previously
described methods (2). The figure shows the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence;
nts 1-40 are from the A/NT/60/68 NP (3). Comparison of the 81/HO NP with the sequence
of the A/NT/60/68 NP (3) indicated 5 nucleotide exchanges. Two of these are leading to
amino acid substitutions. The E114G substitution is in correlation with all other yet
sequenced influenza A virus NPs (4), while the H31IQ substitution is solely found in
the 81/HO NP. It remains to be investigated if the H311Q substitution is a result of
the 81/HO NP adaptation to the new genetic constellation, or if it is found with the
A/Hong Kong/l/68 NP, too.
